May 28 – 31, 2021
The State of Maryland removed many restrictions on travel, outdoor gatherings, youth sports, and restaurants some weeks ago. However, Montgomery County, the county where our tournament is hosted, has remained very conservative in their reopening plan as we are the largest, most populous county in Maryland. Currently, the county is requiring face masks be worn during competition as well as restricting competition to only teams from DC, Maryland and Virginia (DMV). Ironically, all counties around us are allowing teams to compete without masks and host teams from outside the DMV! We have been unsuccessful in getting the county government to grant an exception for the mask rule during play and to allow us to host teams from outside of the DMV despite our relentless efforts. These current Covid restrictions have forced us to think outside the box to accommodate all of you.
Fortunately, we have been able to come up with an alternative plan for the event. We will be moving our event to neighboring counties – Howard and Anne Arundel where these restrictions are not in place. We are excited to announce that we will be partnering with the Soccer Association of Columbia (SAC) and Elite Tournaments to host a combined event. By joining together, we will be able to offer quality competition across all age groups. Because of existing field permits, insurance and tournament sanctioning, the event will be run under the Columbia Invitational name. The format of the event will be similar to our tournament with the exception of the U16-U19 age groups. These age groups will run in a true showcase format with teams playing one game each day – Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There will be no finals or awards in these age groups. Teams who book airfare will have priority scheduling on Monday to allow for time to catch flights. All games for all teams should be completed by 3 p.m. Additionally, a limited number of Friday evening matches will be available for teams U15 and under.
All accepted team applications will be moved under the Columbia Invitational event for flighting and scheduling. Communications moving forward will come from Elite Tournaments.
